The entire month of July is known as National Picnic Month. So many of us are craving a change of scenery, yet we are still a little hesitant about dining in at restaurants. Throughout July and the rest of the summer, why not pack your favorite snacks and take the kiddies to a local park or even in your own backyard. Better yet, let’s be intentional and also dedicate this time to show our appreciation for nature.
We have all become so technologically driven, especially with the state of the world, that we are cut off from the natural world. While we munch, how about we also create a space of awareness, gratitude and appreciation to the Earth around us. Be present.
This grounding experience is beautiful whether it is done individually or shared as a family. We can all develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and also awaken our own sense of self awareness. Our ancestors thrived in the wilderness! Don’t even worry if the kids do not seem interested, plant those seeds. They will grow up wondering why they have such a green thumb or resonate with the color green.
Here are some things to keep in mind while spending time in nature:
- It is Grounding. According to The Chopra Center, “When you make direct physical contact with the earth through your bare feet or by lying in the grass, you reconnect electrically to the battery of the planet. This contact helps to balance the flow of energy in your physiology and has been shown to reduce inflammation, reduce stress and anxiety as well as improve circulatory function, sleeping rhythms, and mood. These benefits appear to be clear indicators that the human body is designed to be in direct contact with the earth.”
- It Increases Connection. Showing appreciation to the essence of the flowers, the trees, the clouds, the birds, the mountains, and all other life forms surrounding you, awakens you to your own existence and interconnectedness to the Earth. Take a moment to inhale the oxygen received from the trees and exhale anything that no longer serves you, it so rewarding.
- It Awakens Your Senses. Spending time in nature stimulates your senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch) more than spending time indoors. Leave the daily news and the social media chatter for this time period and embrace the richness of the human experience.
Instead of spending this summer cramped up on the inside, let’s show appreciation to the great outdoors. Surrender to this moment, breathe, and connect with Mother Earth. Let’s shift our perspective of “outside” and be intentional and aware about how we spend our time there.
