Joyette M Holmes is the fourth special prosecutor appointed in the all-too-familiar heartbreaking case of Amaud Aubrey.
On February 22, 2020, Amaud Aubrey was gunned down in cold-blood by two white supremacists while jogging in his neighborhood in Brunswick, Ga. The shooters are related, one a retired police officer AND it was all caught on film. However, it took the police department two months to make any arrests.
Holmes was appointed by Georgia Attorney General, Chris Carr following a request from Amaud’s Mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, for a new prosecutor who had little to no faith in the county’s handling of her son’s case. And yes, Joyette M. Holmes is black, she’s a woman AND a mother. But before you get TOO excited… let’s gather ALL the facts:
- She is Cobb County’s first African American woman District Attorney sworn in July 2019
- Appointed DA by Governor Brian Kemp
- She is the fourth prosecutor in the Amaud Aubrey case
- She is a Republican
- Married; Mother of two daughters
- Served four years as Chief Magistrate in Cobb County, Georgia
- Originally from Valdosta, Ga
- Attended University Of Georgia, University of Baltimore School of Law
- Dual bachelor’s degrees in psychology and criminal justice
- She is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
- Appointed to serve as special prosecutor by Georgia’s Attorney General, Chris Carr
- She sits on the Board of Directors of M.U.S.T. Ministries

Sis, is accomplished, ok. Nevertheless, I get Tammy Kemp vibes.
Oh, you remember Judge Tammy Kemp. She was the judge in the Botham Jean case in 2019 who went so far as to hug the defendant (the brother did too) after giving the Dallas officer, Amber Guyger, a 10-year sentence. Which many deemed light for technically breaking into an innocent, unarmed black man’s home and killing him on-site.
…yea, her.
And let me be clear, I say all this, NOT to discourage my people, but rather to keep everything in perspective as this case continues to unfold. Because everything WE (Black people) think is “open and shut” there is some long-drawn-out blame-game that proves otherwise.
“Our office will immediately gather all materials related to the investigation thus far and continue to seek additional information to move this case forward,” Holmes said in a statement of her assignment. “We appreciate the confidence that Attorney General Carr has in our office’s ability to bring to light the justice that this case deserves.”
Joyette Holmes, Cobb County DA
I want to have faith in this Black Woman, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned. Whether Mrs. Holmes knows it or not, her decision will set the tone for how justice and the state of reform in the Black community will continue going forward. And if we’re being completely transparent, it will determine if white supremacists will lay low or start aiming high.
Joyette M. Holmes will decide not only for Georgia but for the rest of the country if it’s STILL ok or not to kill black citizens in cold blood and get away with it.
The shooters, Trevor McMichael and Gregory McMichael are currently being held without bond in Glynn County Jail in Brunswick, Ga.
We will continue to follow the developments on this story.
