I understand the luxury and treat it is to sit back and get your hair done by a professional. And TRUST, us stylists are missing our clients too! But these unprecedented times where salons are closed untiled further notice, it’s definitely a plus for the overall health of your hair to be able to perform effective treatments in between your regularly scheduled hair appointments at home. Hey Kitchen Beauticians!

And if you are like me, you’re trying all the fun, trendy Youtube beauty tutorials. As a professional hairstylist, I like for my hair to look good, yes, but more importantly, I want my hair to be healthy. During the quarantine, I’ve spent more time doing different hair masks and treatments, seeing what my hair likes and responds best too.

Here are a few ingredients I’ve tried that I think are beneficial and the best part? You can find all these ingredients in your kitchen and customize a hair mask specific to your hair needs:

  • Raw Honey: Great for dry and damaged hair. Honey is a humectant that helps to attract and maintain the moisture of the hair. I would recommend about ½ cup of honey mixed in with your mask. The use of honey alone may not give you the desired results.
  • Mayonnaise: Helps to strengthen the hair. It contains L-cysteine that makes up a disulfide bridge that supplies the strength of keratin. Keratin is a protein that is responsible for the structure of the hair.
  • Banana: Helps to improve the scalp and make the hair more manageable. For those who struggle with dandruff, bananas would be essential in your masks to help with that issue. Rich in Vitamin C, of course, potassium, and Vitamin B6. It also aids in the elasticity of the hair.
  • Avocado: Good source of moisture. It helps to strengthen and protect the hair. It provides vitamin B & E and promotes hair growth.
  • Eggs: This is cool because you can choose between the opposing benefits in one food! The egg whites or the yolk. The egg whites help those who deal with oily scalp by absorbing excess oil. One the other hand, those who need more moisture can use the egg yolk. Egg yolks are packed with protein, Vitamin A, biotin, Vitamin E.

Create your mask and apply to hair, cover with a processing cap, let sit for at least 45min, and proceed with normal shampoo and condition routine. This is definitely a good time to see what you can do to maintain your hair on your own.

Only a few times in life do we actually grant ourselves the opportunity to slow down and put what matters into perspective. In the first quarter and a historical one at that, 2020 has presented such an opportunity. Although it is under unfortunate circumstances if you’re a ‘glass half full’ kind of girl, you’ll look to positively take advantage of this very rare moment and do SOMETHING to that head! LOL
